Spiders Unable To Overcome Slow Start vs Rhode Island

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Rhode Island jumped out to a 9-0 lead and did not let up for the remainder of the game, taking a 78-67 Atlantic 10 win over the Spiders on Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
The Rams took a 13-5 advantage early in the game to force a Richmond timeout four minutes into the contest, scoring the opening nine points on a trio of 3-pointers before Jacob Gilyard put the Spiders on the board in the third minute of play.
Nathan Cayo and Grant Golden kept the Spiders in the game early, but the Rams continued to put up points, extending their lead to double digits with 11:39 remaining in the half.
The Spiders managed to hold Rhode Island scoreless over the next three minutes, but the visitors were able to extend their lead once again, taking a 44-34 advantage into the locker room. Golden led the Spiders with 12 points and four rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
The Rams continued to produce on offense, scoring seven straight points following a Jake Wojcik 3-pointer to open the half and building their lead to as many as 19 in the second half.
Gilyard, Wojcik and Andre Gustavson each tallied 3-pointers over a two-minute span midway through the second half, but Rhode Island refused to relent, shooting 58 percent from the field and 44 percent from three on their way to a 78-67 win and a 1-1 mark in A-10 play.
Gilyard finished with a team-high 19 points and four steals on the day, while Golden and Wojcik also scored in double figures with 17 and 12 points, respectively. Golden led the Spiders with eight rebounds and six assists, matching his career high.
The Spiders return to action on Saturday, January 12, when they travel up to Washington, D.C., to face off with conference foe George Washington. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
