RICHMOND, Va. – Fresh off its first Colonial Athletic Association win of the year, the University of Richmond football team hits the road Saturday afternoon to take on defending league champion and 18th-ranked Maine in Orono. Game time is set for noon at Alfond Stadium.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on www.FloFootball.com as part of the CAA's broadcast package. The FloFootball streaming is a paid service with special pricing for CAA fans of $12.50 per month or $95.88 per year ($7.99 per month). Fans can sign up for the service by clicking HERE.
Additionally, the game will be audio broadcast on ESPN Richmond 99.5 FM/950 AM and TuneIn with Bob Black, Chris Anderson and Matt Smith will be on the call. Full game notes are available in the links to the right and are brought to you by Owen & Owens.
The Spiders are coming off a 23-20 victory over UAlbany last week at home at Robins Stadium. Richmond's defense had its best game of the year so far, holding the CAA's third-highest scoring team to 15 points under its season average and a season-low 20 points. The Spiders also had a season-high 7.0 sacks of the Great Danes who came into the game allowing only six sacks against in the first five games of the year.
Senior defensive lineman Maurice Jackson (Levittown, Pa.) led the way with 3.0 sacks and was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week after posting an interception and a forced fumble. Jackson's three sacks are the most since Andrew Clyde had three in 2018 against Albany and only Lawrence Sidbury had more sacks in a game with 4.0 against Montana in the 2008 National Championship game.
Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Kobie Turner (Clifton, Va.) added two sacks and record matched his career-high with seven tackles for the second-straight game. Freshman linebacker Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) continued his strong play with a team-high 11 tackles, including his first career sack. Wheeler leads all CAA freshman in tackles with 40 on the season, averaging 8.0 tackles per game despite only starting two of the first five games.
Saturday's game marks the 28th meeting all-time between Richmond and Maine. The series has been a back-and-forth affair with Maine holding on to a slim 14-13 margin all-time against the Spiders dating back to the first meeting in 1984. The teams are 6-6 against each other in Orono and Richmond is 7-8 against the Black Bears at home.
Last year, Maine came to Robins Stadium as 16th-ranked team in the country posting a 28-9 victory over the Spiders. Neither team was able to run the ball much last year with the Spiders holding Maine to only 57 yards rushing the Black Bears holding Richmond to just 29 yards on the ground. Maine quarterback Chris Ferguson connected on 20-of-32 through the air for 229 yards and four touchdowns. Earnest Edwards did most of the damage on the receiving end with six catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Reid Chenault (Goochland, Va.) went 19-of-34 for 224 yards while also rushing for the Spiders' lone touchdown.
Richmond will be making its first trip to Orono since the 2014 season when the Spiders dropped a 33-20 contest to the Black Bears. Richmond's last win in the Pine Tree State came October 17, 2009 with a 38-21 win.
Maine enters Saturday's game with a 2-3 overall record and an 0-2 mark in league play but have dropped two games against top 10 teams in Villanova and Towson. The Black Bears are led by quarterback Chris Ferguson who is second in the conference in passing with 1,622 yards in five games (324.4 yards per game). Ferguson has connected on 111-of-193 through the air for seven touchdowns but has thrown eight interceptions.
Maine has two of the top wide receivers in the conference as well. Earnest Edwards leads the team with 473 yards receiving on 19 catches, averaging a league-best 24.9 yards per catch. Jaquan Blair leads the team with 30 records for 404 yards, with his 30 receptions ranking fifth in the conference.
