DULUTH, Ga. -- The Richmond Spiders men's golf team rebounded from a disappointing second round on Monday afternoon to register one of the best scores in program history Tuesday at the Autotrader Intercollegiate. The Spiders 280 (-8) in the third round -- the best of any school in the field of 13 -- tied the seventh-lowest 18-hole team score in program history and was 19 shots better than their score in the second round.
"I'm not really surprised by today. This is a very talented group," said coach Adam Decker. "I was more surprised with how we played yesterday afternoon. But after round two we just talked about being more confident and not playing with any fear. The guys responded well and I continue to be encouraged. The season is a process and we are learning more with each event played."
Richmond moved up two spots on the leaderboard on Tuesday and finished the 54-hole event in ninth place at 872 (+8). Freshman Ben Cooper was the top Spider on the leaderboard for the first time in his short college career, finishing tied for 21st at 217 (+1) after carding a 71 (-1) in the third round. Freshman Lou Baker moved up 24 spots on the leaderboard on Tuesday by shooting a three-under 69, making him one of 11 players in the 78-man field to score in the 60s on Tuesday. Baker finished tied for 26th at 219 (+3) along with teammate senior Andrew Sciarretta. Sciarretta, who shot 70 (-2) on Tuesday, has now finished in the top 30 in back-to-back starts for the first time in his career.Â
Sophomore Michael Childress provided Richmond's fourth red figure on Tuesday, shooting 70 (-2) to move 15 spots up the leaderboard and finish tied for 52nd at 224 (+8), one shot in front of Spider junior Michael Baker, who tied for 54th. Playing as an individual, sophomore Carter Cook fired an even-par 72 Tuesday and finished the event tied for 63rd at 228 (+12).
The Spiders will conclude their fall season in two weeks at the Steelwood Collegiate in Loxley, Ala. on October 26th-27th.
