Walker’s Goal Gives Spiders 1-0 Win Against VCU
10/17/2019 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team scored two minutes into the second half after redshirt junior Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) beat the keeper and earned a 1-0 shutout win Thursday against VCU at President's Field at River Road.
"It is a great result to do it against VCU and I am really proud of my team," head coach Marty Beall said. "This was a very important three points for us and we stuck to our tactics. We asked the girls to give us everything they had today and they went out and executed."
It is the first win against VCU since 2015 and gives Richmond (6-7-2, 3-4 A-10) a much needed three points in the standings. VCU outshot the Spiders, 14-7, and finished with 10 corner kicks.
Freshman Alex Helbling (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) making her first collegiate start in goal finished with a shutout and four saves. Her best save of the game came on a PK in the 72nd minute making a diving stop to her left to take away VCU's equalizer chance from Paige Franks.
"Obviously, she made a great save on the PK," Beall said. "I am really proud of her for getting her first start and rising to the occasion."
In the 48th minute, senior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) played a perfect pass to a streaking Walker who beat the keeper and scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Helbling made three of her four saves in the second half to keep the Rams off the scoreboard. The Richmond defense was stellar in the shutout as sophomore Molly Morgan (Upper Arlington, Ohio), redshirt freshman Evyn Magenbauer (Salem, Va.), Taylor Fine (San Diego, Ca.), freshman Gianna Lucchesi (Hamilton, N.J.) and freshman Catie Groves (Denver, Colorado) all kept VCU scoreless.
Richmond will head back out on the road to face Rhode Island on Sunday, Oct. 20, at Noon.
