Spiders Roll CSUN To Secure Best Start Since 2012
11/17/2019 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- After a pair of heart-stopping wins to start the season, the Richmond Spiders made sure there would be no drama at the end of Sunday's game vs CSUN, starting the game on a 19-2 run and building a 55-18 halftime lead en route to a 90-62 win that left them at 3-0 for the first time since 2012.Â
"We had every advantage coming into today," said coach Chris Mooney. "They're on the opposite coast. They played on Friday night. And it was great to capitalize on those advantages right away."
Nick Sherod scored a game-high 25 points and hit seven of his nine three-point attempts, coming within one of the school record for three-pointers in a game. Jacob Gilyard added 18 for the Spiders to go along with a game-high seven assists. Grant Golden recorded his 11th career double-double, registering 11 points and 12 rebounds despite playing just 18 minutes.Â
Richmond made its first five shots from the field and had scored 16 points before CSUN recorded its first points of the game on a jumper at the 15:55 mark of the first half. After the Matadors cut the Spiders lead to 21-10, Richmond poured in 22 straight points to build a 43-10 advantage and stretched its lead to 55-18 at intermission. Richmond shot 67 percent from the field in the first half and made seven of 10 shots from three-point range while holding CSUN to just eight field goals on 27 shots (29.6 percent).Â
The Spiders substituted frequently in the second half and expanded their lead to as many as 41 before pulling all starters with five minutes remaining in the game. Richmond is now 3-0 for the first time since 2012 and the third time under Chris Mooney (also 2006). Richmond finished the game with 15 three-pointers, its most since the 2016-17 season at UMass (also 15).Â
Richmond has scored at least 90 points in all three of its games this season, the first time the Spiders have reached the 90-point mark in three consecutive games since February 1969. The Spiders will try to start a season with four straight wins for the first time since the 1985-86 season Friday night at the Robins Center against McNeese State. Tip time is 7:00 PM and the game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus and MASN.Â
