UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Spiders junior guard Jacob Gilyard has been named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Gilyard, who shared the award with VCU's Marcus Santos-Silva, averaged 22.0 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.0 steals while shooting 65 percent from the field in Richmond's wins over Vanderbilt and CSUN.Â
Gilyard made arguably the game's biggest play in Richmond's win over Vanderbilt on Thursday, intercepting a Commodores pass near the arc with four seconds left in a tie game and flipping the ball ahead to Andre Gustavson, who was fouled on dunk attempt with 0.6 seconds left and made the game-winning free throw. The steal was Gilyard's seventh of the game, matching his career high and coming within one of the school record for steals in a game.Â
Sunday against CSUN, Gilyard scored 18 points and dished seven assists as the Spiders raced out to a 55-18 halftime lead en route to 90-62 win. He currently ranks 19th in D-I in scoring at 22.7 points per game and is also among the national leaders in steals (4th at 4.3 steals per game) and assists (26th at 6.3 assists per game)Â
This is the second weekly A-10 honor of Gilyard's career. He won the league's Player of the Week Award on February 11, 2019 after leading Richmond to wins over George Mason and George Washington.Â
Gilyard is the second different Spider to earn an A-10 Player of the Week Award this season after junior guard Nick Sherod shared the Award with Dayton's Obi Toppin last week. Richmond is the fourth school in Atlantic 10 history to have two different conference Player of the Week winners in the first two weeks of the season, joining Davidson in 2017, Massachusetts in 2013, and Temple in 1998.Â
Gilyard was also named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week by College Sports Madness on Monday.Â
The Spiders will seek their first 4-0 start since the 1985-86 season Friday night at 7 PM at the Robins Center against McNeese State.Â
