RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond athletic department hosted the annual Etiquette Dinner and Networking event for junior Spider student-athletes this week at the Country Club of Virginia. The event was put on in collaboration with the Spiders Leadership Initiative, University of Richmond Career and Alumni Services teams and the Spider Club preparing Spider student-athletes for life after collegiate athletics.
"This is a great event that helps broaden the experience of our junior student-athletes," Associate Athletic Director for Leadership Development Lauren Wicklund said. "The skills learned by our student-athletes at this event are invaluable as they move toward life after college. Events like this add to our student-athlete experience here at Richmond and continue to focus on the holistic approach we have for our student-athletes."
The evening was a formal affair as UR student-athletes convened for dinner and a presentation on the finer details of business and personal etiquette. The evening touched on the specifics of dinner etiquette, from the placement of silverware and plates to maintaining appropriate conversation and physical posture.
This year, the event was expanded to include a networking portion of the event touching on the importance of networking and the role of formal dinners within career-building. The connections that friends, colleagues and new acquaintances may have are valuable assets for any young professional.
"It is always great to connect our current Spider student-athletes with our Richmond Alumni," Assistant Athletic Director for Development Jasmonn Coleman said. "Our alumni enjoy giving back to our student-athletes and sharing their professional experiences, which has a tremendous impact on our current Spiders as they prepare for the next stage in their careers."
Former Richmond alumni were in attendance as part of the Spider Club portion of the event, connecting both former and current student-athletes and providing real world networking experience.
