No. 13 Hawks Narrowly Escape Spiders In A-10 Championship Thriller
11/09/2019 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 13 ranked and No. 1 seeded Saint Joseph's Hawks scored in the opening minute of the second quarter and held off a threatening Spider offense to take a 1-0 win in Saturday's Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship game at Crenshaw Field.
Â
A back-and-forth first quarter saw both teams take a pair of shots, but neither could get on the board to go to the second stanza in a scoreless tie.
Â
Saint Joseph's scored the game winner 55 seconds into the period on a redirect in front of cage and continued to put on the offensive pressure through the remaining minutes of the half to take a 7-3 shot advantage at the break.
Â
The Spiders came out hot in the second half, not allowing a single Saint Joseph's shot in the final 30 minutes of play while taking six of their own. Despite the fight on both ends of the field, Richmond was unable to capitalize, falling in their first A-10 title game appearance since 2015.
Â
Richmond finished with a 9-7 shot advantage in the game, while the Hawks drew five penalty corners to the Spiders' three. Frankie-Lynne Conklin finished with a save in cage, but was rarely challenged due to the tough play on the defensive line.
Â
Four Spiders were recognized after the conclusion of the game, as seniors Elise Zwicklbauer and Amanda DaSilva, sophomore Steffie Bongers and freshman Tess Keppel were all named to the All-Championship Team for their performances in the semifinals and final.
Â
The Spiders wrap up the season with an 11-10 record, tallying four more wins than a season ago, and a 6-2 mark in A-10 play to finish in a tie for second place.
