Spiders Ranked 22nd in Initial NET Rankings
12/17/2019 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Less than two days after a fourth straight win moved them to 9-1 for the first time in 34 years, the Richmond Spiders debuted at 22 out of 353 Division I teams in the initial NCAA Men's Basketball NET Rankings of the 2019-20 season. Richmond ranks third-highest among Atlantic 10 teams, behind Dayton (10) and Duquesne (20). The Atlantic 10 is one of four conferences to have at least three teams in the top 22 of NET Rankings; joining the Big 12, Pac-12, and Big Ten.
The Rankings are the primary evaluation tool the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Selection Committee uses to evaluate Division I teams. The NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool) Rankings replaced RPI last season. The system is based on a variety of factors, including efficiency on both ends of the floor, strength of schedule, scoring margin, and more. The NET Rankings will be updated daily through the remainder of the season and are available at NCAA.com.Â
Â
The Spiders were also represented in a pair of national polls released on Monday. Richmond received three points in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, the third straight week Richmond has received votes in the poll. 2019-20 is the first time since 2010-11 that the Spiders have received votes in the AP Poll. Also on Monday, Richmond appeared in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll for the first time this season, receiving a single vote.Â
Â
Richmond will visit Old Dominion on Wednesday. The game will be shown regionally on WTVR Channel 6-3 (Comcast 206, Verizon 466) and streamed nationally on ESPN3.Â
