Track & Field Turns In Strong Team Effort To Finish First At CNU Holiday Open

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond opened the indoor season in impressive fashion Sunday in Newport News as the Spiders took part in the CNU Holiday Open. The Spiders finished in a tie for first place with Hampton with 128.50 points despite not running any relays or throw events.
Junior Brooke Fazio (Basking Ridge, N.J.) won the 600-meter run with a time of 1:31.94, breaking the facility record that was set back in 2011 (1:32.99). Senior Maria Acosta (Maywood, N.J.) took home second place at 1:33.44, while sophomore Rachel Helbling (McDonald, Pa.) was third with a time of 1:35.86 giving the Spiders the top three-times.
The Spiders had three runners qualify for the 60-meter dash finals in sophomore Tamar Accius (Jacksonville, Fla.), sophomore Kayla Woods (Wilmington, Del.) and senior Morgan Towe (Suffolk, Va.). That trio placed 1-2-3 in the finals with Accius winning with a time of 7.70, Woods placing second by tying her personal best with a 7.94 and Towe setting a new personal-best with a 7.99 sweeping the podium.
Woods took home the women's long jump competition with a jump of 5.67m, topping Jaelan Leonard of Hampton who finished second at 5.63m.
Senior Haley Berkeley (Richmond, Va.) placed second in the 400-meter dash, posting a personal-best time of 58.88. Sophomore Amaya Jackson (Richmond, Va.) placed third with another personal-best at 59.91.
Sophomore Kendra Smither (Richmond, Va.) added a win for the Spiders in the mile run with a time of 5:17.36, winning by over 12 seconds against her closest competitor.
Accius took home second place in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 25.29, just behind Mallory Pitchford of Hampton (25.12) while Berkeley was fifth with a time of 25.77.
Richmond recorded two more top-three finishes in the 3000-meter run. Senior Claire Brown (Erie, Pa.) posted a time of 10:05.02 placing second overall while junior Caroline Robelen (Glen Allen, Va.) was third wat 10:05.21.
Freshman Kamryn Ross (Richmond, Va.) finished fourth overall in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 9.11.
Running unattached on the men's side, freshmen Riley Fletcher and Jake Schindel took the top two times in the mike with times of 4:29.75 and 4:30.58, respectively.
The Spiders return to action after the New Year January 17-18 at the VMI Keydet Invitational in Lexington.
