UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- For the second time this season, Spiders guard Jacob Gilyard has been named A-10 Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Gilyard, who shared the honor with Duquesne's Michael Hughes, averaged 16.5 points, 8.5 assists, six rebounds, and five steals while shooting 67 percent from the field and committing no turnovers in Richmond's wins over Hampton and South Alabama last week.Â
Gilyard was also named A-10 Co-Player of the Week on November 18th after leading Richmond to wins over Vanderbilt and CSUN. Dayton's Obi Toppin is the only other player in the conference to be named A-10 Player of the Week multiple times this season.
Tuesday at Hampton, Gilyard scored his 1,000th career point on a free throw with 2:54 remaining in the first half. In the second half, he helped the Spiders increase their four-point halftime lead to as many as 22 en route to an 80-63 win over the Pirates. Gilyard finished the game with 18 points, 10 assists, four steals, and no turnovers, becoming the first D-I player with at least 18 points, 10 assists, four steals, and no turnovers in a game in six years. (VCU's Darius Theus did it vs Saint Joseph's on January 17, 2013.)
Sunday vs South Alabama, Gilyard totaled 15 points, seven assists, and six steals while tying a career high with eight rebounds. All 15 of his points came in the second half as Richmond scored 46 points after halftime in a 75-57 win that moved the Spiders record to 8-1, their best nine-game start since the 1985-86 season.Â
Gilyard currently leads Division I with 3.89 steals per game, ranks eighth in assist-turnover ratio at 4.07, and is 17th in the nation with 6.3 assists per game. He is making 51.3 percent of his three-point field goals, the fourth-best rate in Division I, and hitting on 59.8 percent of all of his field goal attempts, the second-best figure nationally for any player under 6'4".Â
This is the third A-10 Player of the Week honor of Gilyard's career. Last season, he was named the Conference's Player of the Week on February 11th following Richmond's wins vs George Mason and George Washington.Â
Next up for Gilyard and the Spiders is Charleston on Saturday in Richmond's final home game before the start of A-10 play. Tip time is set for 5:00 PM and the game will be shown on NBC Sports Network.Â
