Jacob Gilyard Named A-10 Player of the Week
02/11/2019 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Jacob Gilyard has been named the Atlantic 10's Player of the Week after leading the Spiders to a pair of home wins, the conference announced Monday. Gilyard, a sophomore guard, averaged 22.5 points, 5.5 assists, and 5.0 steals while shooting 64 percent from the field in victories over George Mason and George Washington last week.
This is Gilyard's first career A-10 Player of the Week Award. Teammate and fellow sophomore Grant Golden was the conference's player of the week twice earlier this year, making the Spiders one of four teams to have multiple players win A-10 Player of the Week Awards this season along with Dayton, George Mason, and Saint Joseph's. The Spiders and Saint Joseph's are the only teams to have multiple non-seniors honored with the league's player of the week award this year.
February 6 against George Mason, Gilyard led Richmond in points (28), assists (six), steals (six), and rebounds (five) as the Spiders upset the Patriots 81-67. He was the first D-I player to reach those totals in a game since FIU's Brian Beard on December 11, 2017 and just the fourth in the last eight seasons.
February 9 against George Washington, Gilyard led UR with 17 assists, five assists, and four steals. He played the first 33 minutes of the game before coming to the bench for the final seven minutes of the game with the Spiders up by more than 20 points, his only time out of the lineup last week.
After last week's games, Gilyard has increased his scoring average to 17.0 points per game, third best in the A-10. In conference games, he's averaging 19.1 points per game, behind only Saint Joseph's Charlie Brown. Gilyard remains among the nation's leaders in steals. He currently sits in second place at 3.27 per game, just behind national leader Mattis Thybulle of Washington (3.29).
Gilyard and the rest of the Spiders will travel to VCU Wednesday evening. The game will tip at 7 PM and be shown nationally on ESPNU.
