Lanchbury & Menges Sweep Southern Conference Weekly Honors
02/26/2019 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond sophomore attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) and junior defender Sean Menges (Richmond, Va.) swept the Southern Conference weekly awards Tuesday as Lanchbury was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Menges picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors.
This marks the first weekly awards for the Spiders this season who vaulted into the national rankings this week after posting back-to-back home wins over UMBC and No. 6 Notre Dame last week. The Spiders enter the week ranked No. 11 in the Nike/US Lacrosse poll, No. 14 in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and No. 16 USILA Coaches Poll. Richmond will carry a three-game overall winning streak into Friday night's game against No. 6 Duke, while also holding an 11-game home winning streak at Robins Stadium. Tickets for the game at $10 for adults and $5 for youth 12 and under and can be purchased on the day of the game.
Lanchbury earns his second career SoCon weekly honor after getting the nod last season as a freshman in April. He has been one of the most prolific goal scorers in the country so far this season and last week he guided the Spiders to two home wins over the Retrievers and Fighting Irish. Lanchbury scored eight goals and handed out an assist in the two victories.
Against UMBC, Lanchbury tied his career-high with five goals, marking the second time this season he has scored five goals (vs. No. 3 Maryland). He followed that performance up with three goals and an assist as the Spiders knocked off No. 6 Notre Dame at Robins Stadium. Lanchbury currently ranks third in NCAA Division I in scoring this season with 17 goals through the first four games. He has scored at least three goals in each game this season and has had at least three goals in eight out of the last 10 games, dating back to last year.
Menges picks up his first career SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honor. He becomes the first Spider to earn weekly defensive honors this year and the first non-goalie for Richmond to pick up the accolade since Brendan Hynes in 2016. In fact, he is only the fourth different Spider to earn SoCon Defensive weekly honors in program history and just the second non-goalie (Benny Pugh 9x, Brendan Hynes 5x, Blake Goodman 2x).
Menges had the top defensive assignment against the top opposing midfielder, holding both from UMBC and Notre Dame to far less their season average. Against Notre Dame, he held their top midfielder to just two goals despite that player averaging five goals per game. Menges tallied four ground balls and forced three turnovers on the week, helping the Spiders run their winning streak to three games and 11-straight at home at Robins Stadium. The victory over Notre Dame was the highest ranked opponent Richmond has ever beaten and the fifth nationally ranked team they had knocked off in the six-year history of the program.
