Spiders Run Over GW To Extend Win Streak
02/09/2019 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Spiders posted one of the best shooting games of the Chris Mooney era and controlled the boards in in a decisive 89-63 win over George Washington in Saturday night's SolarTyme Green Game at the Robins Center.
"I thought we played a really good game, and the energy of the crowd was terrific," head coach Chris Mooney said after the game. Richmond shot 62.3 percent from the field (33-53), its second-highest in any A-10 game in 14 seasons under Chris Mooney. (The Spiders made 62.7 percent of their shots in a win at George Mason last March.)
The Spiders started their hot shooting early, as Grant Golden and Jake Wojcik combined for 17 points in the opening nine minutes to lead the hosts to a 25-17 advantage.
Richmond stretched its lead to 36-17 later in the first half after holding the Colonials scoreless for a six-minute span. But George Washington used three three-pointers from Maceo Jack to claw back into the game, narrowing the Spiders margin to 43-30 at halfitme.
GW cut its deficit to nine over the first four minutes of the second half, but Jacob Gilyard responded with seven straight Richmond points and found Nathan Cayo for a reverse layup off a steal to send the Robins Center crowd to its feet and build Richmond's lead to 15 at 61-46 with 12:28 remaining.
"Jacob was just tremendous tonight," Mooney said. "I've been talking to him about having a command of the game and of our team, and he did those things. His voice and knowledge of the game are very valuable for us."
Minutes later, a 15-0 run extended Richmond's lead to 29 and put the game out of reach. With the win, the Spiders have won two straight and three of their last four. Richmond has also swept its season series with the Colonials and is now 6-1 in its last seven games vs GW.
Golden and Gilyard led the Spiders with 17 points each on the night, while Wojcik finished with 12 and Souleymane Koureissi tied his career high of 10. Golden, Koureissi and Andre Gustavson collected five rebounds each, leading Richmond to a 32-18 advantage on the boards, its best rebound differential in an A-10 game since 2013 vs Duquesne. For the first time under Mooney, the Spiders allowed zero offensive rebounds in a game.
Richmond will now travel just a few miles down the road to face rival VCU on Wednesday in the first game of the Lumber Liquidators Capital City Classic. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m and the game will air on ESPN2 or ESPNU.
