Yates Named To All-Academic Team
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – A pair of Spider sophomores earned spots on the Atlantic 10's All-Conference teams, the league announced Tuesday. Guard Jacob Gilyard was named Second Team All-Conference and forward Grant Golden was named Third Team All-Conference, making Richmond the first school since Rhode Island in 2015 to have a pair of sophomores on the All A-10 Teams.
"We're thrilled to have both Jacob and Grant on the All-Conference teams. It's not often you see underclassmen getting this type of recognition and to have a pair of our guys selected says so much about what they've accomplished in their short time at Richmond and what is possible for this team moving forward," said head coach Chris Mooney.
In addition to earning Second Team All-Conference honors, Gilyard was also named to the league's All-Defense team after scoring 17.9 points per game in conference play, first in the A-10, and leading the conference with 2.9 steals per game. Gilyard is the second Spiders sophomore to ever be named First or Second Team All-Atlantic 10. He joins Kevin Anderson in 2008-09, the season before he was named the A-10 Player of the Year.
Gilyard is the first Spider to be named to the league's All-Defense Team since Darrius Garrett in 2011-12. He enters the A-10 Tournament with 85 steals this season, four shy of matching his own Richmond single-season steals record from last year.
Golden was named Third Team All-Atlantic 10 for the second straight season after finishing second in the conference in scoring (17.4 points per game) and seventh in rebounding (7.1 per game). He is the sixth Spider to earn multiple All-Conference honors from the Atlantic 10, joining T.J. Cline (2016-17), Kendall Anthony (2014-15), Kevin Anderson (2009-11), David Gonzalvez (2008-10), and Mike Skrocki (2002, 2004).
Together, Gilyard and Golden are the first underclassmen (freshmen or sophomores) from the same school to be selected All-Atlantic 10 since 2015, when sophomores E.C. Matthews and Hassan Martin of Rhode Island did it. The Rams went on to make the NCAA Tournament in two of the following three seasons.
Graduate transfer Noah Yates was named to the A-10 All-Academic Team, becoming the first Richmond player to earn conference academic honors since 2007, when Peter Thomas and Drew Crank were named to the team. "I'm really proud of Noah," said Mooney. "He's done a great job of fitting in on the court and in the classroom since he's arrived here and I'm not at all surprised to see him being recognized for his academic and athletic talents."
Yates, who graduated from Yale with a degree in economics last May, is averaging 3.6 points and 2.4 rebounds per game for the Spiders while pursuing his Master's Degree in Finance at the Robins School of Business.
The Spiders spent Tuesday in Brooklyn, N.Y. preparing for the start of the A-10 Men's Basketball Championship. Richmond will open the tournament Wednesday at the Barclays Center, taking on the Fordham Rams at 3:30 PM on ESPN Plus.
