Spiders Knock Off Georgetown, 4-1

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team had a strong doubles showing and won three singles matches to take down Georgetown, 4-1, Sunday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
The Spiders (7-6) won the doubles point after winning all three matches. Junior Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) fell behind 0-2 before winning the next six games against Sofie Moenster and Cecilia Lynham at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.) and freshman Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) won an easy match 6-1 against Anna Short and Elena De Santis.
Junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) and sophomore Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) took down Sydney Goodson and Risa Nakagawa, 6-3, to complete the doubles sweep.
In singles action, Marshall quickly gave Richmond a 2-0 lead after a straight-sets win against Goodson, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
Senior Ana Ramirez (Mexico City) earned a comeback win against Short, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles. The Hoyas cut the lead to 3-1 after Nakagawa defeated Heiberg, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.
Owens clinched the win for the second match in a row against De Santis, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 3 singles. Owens led the third set 5-2 but De Santis won the next three games to tie the set at 5-5. Owens didn't panic and won the next two games to win 7-5.
The remaining two singles matches went unfinished as Dunbar was trailing 3-6, 6-4, 3-0 in the third set at No. 1 singles. At No. 6 singles, Haynes lost the first set tiebreaker 7-6 (6) and was leading 5-4 in the second set.
Richmond will head out on the road for a key Atlantic 10 match at Davidson on Sunday, March 31, at 1 p.m.
