Spiders Beaten On The Boards In Loss At UMass
03/06/2019 | Men's Basketball
AMHERST, Ma. – Grant Golden and Jacob Gilyard both reached the 20-point mark but struggles on the boards and from deep sent the Spiders to an 87-79 loss at UMass Wednesday in their final road game of the A-10 season.
"They really paid a lot of attention to Grant [Golden] and Nate [Cayo] on the low block, but we had some drives early that we didn't make that we need to make and then we had some opportunities from three and those are the ones you're going to get especially when you're double-teamed," coach Chris Mooney told ESPN Richmond after the game.
Richmond missed its first 10 three-point attempts before Golden banked in a three at the first-half buzzer to cut Massachusetts' lead to 36-32 at the break.
The Spiders used an 8-0 spurt shortly after halftime to take a 40-38 lead just over two minutes into the second half after three-pointers by Jacob Gilyard and Jake Wojcik and a jumper by Golden.
But UMass answered with a 14-4 run to take command of the game with 13 minutes remaining. The Minutemen would expand their lead to as many as 14 and coast to a 87-79 win. Minutemen senior center Rashaan Holloway led all players with 28 points and 12 rebounds as UMass outrebounded the Spiders 47-27, Richmond's second-worst rebounding differential in a game this season.
While Richmond finished a respectable 9-31 from three-point range, four of those makes game in the final 93 seconds after the outcome was no longer in doubt.
Golden scored a team-high 21 points for the Spiders and added nine rebounds and six assists. He joined T.J. Cline in 2016-17 as the only Spiders to record 500 points, 200 rebounds, and 100 assists in a season.
Gilyard scored 20 to record his second straight 20-point game. He also added six assists.
The Spiders will finish up their A-10 regular-season schedule on Saturday at the Robins Center when they host Davidson at 6 PM. The game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Washington Plus and ESPN Plus and Richmond will honor seniors Julius Johnson and Keith Oddo during pregame.
