RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond had six of its programs honored by the NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR), the NCAA announced Wednesday. The NCAA presents these prestigious honors annually to teams for academic excellence after scoring in the top 10 percent of their sports in the most recent Academic Progress Rates (APR). The awards are based on the recent APR numbers that represent a combination of scores from the past four academic years.
Men's cross country, women's cross country, women's track, women's golf, women's soccer and women's swimming and diving achieved the public honor for the Spiders. Women's soccer has earned the honor for six-straight years while both men's cross country and women's swimming and diving have accomplished the feat for five-straight years.
This marks the 13th-straight year that Richmond has had multiple teams earn Public Recognition Awards and the six programs represented are third-most all-time in program history (2011-12/9 programs, 2010-11/8 programs).
"The academic success of our Spider student-athletes is of paramount importance at the University of Richmond," Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt said. "We are proud our varsity programs continue to excel academically and these strong APR achievements point to the overall health of our athletic program. In addition, the public recognition of these successful achievements is a testament to the hard work and dedication our student-athletes, coaches, faculty and staff."
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams.
Teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,328, up by 44 from the previous academic year. APRs for programs in the top 10% ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,214, marking an increase of 26 teams from last year. Of the teams recognized, 471 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 857 competed in women's sports.
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 8. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
