Men’s Tennis Trio Earns A-10 All-Conference Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team was rewarded after making a run to the Atlantic 10 championship match having three juniors Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.), George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.), Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) named All-Conference, the league announced on Monday.
Evans picked up his second-straight Second Team honor after making second team in 2018. Fernandez was named First Team All-A-10 for the first time and Lovitt earned Second Team honors for the first time.
Fernandez took on a leadership role with the Spiders this season moving into the top of the lineup going 12-11 in singles and was 6-7 at No. 1. Fernandez ended the 2019 season with a 5-3 record in his last eight matches. He earned a clutch straight-sets win against Davidson's Axel Fries, a fellow First Team All-A10 member, to help Richmond advance to the A-10 Championship match. Fernandez paired with teammate Josh Keitelman at No. 1 doubles going 12-9 on the season.
Evans had another solid spring season with a 10-8 singles record and played 10 matches at No. 2 singles with a 5-5 mark. Evans led the team with 16 doubles wins with teammates Joe Nardini (7-3) and Campbell Erwin (9-1). With Erwin, they only lost one doubles match all season and went 2-0 in doubles at the A-10 Tournament.
Lovitt had a breakout season for Richmond posting a team best 17 singles wins, including a 11-2 record at No. 4. During the spring season, Lovitt has a nine-match winning streak and went 8-1 in his last 11 matches to finish the season. In doubles, he paired with teammate John Walsh going 15-9 and was 13-8 at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. He was the A-10 Player of the Week on Feb. 19 and was 4-1 against A-10 opponents in singles during the regular season.
The Spiders finished 2019 with an 18-6 overall record, the second most wins since a school record 25 wins in 2017. Richmond earned a No. 2 seed in the A-10 Tournament and made a run to the championship match after defeating Fordham (W, 4-1) and Davidson (W, 4-0). The Spiders fell in the championship to crosstown rival VCU, 4-0, but will return their entire top six players for next season.
