Fazio Advances to the Quarterfinals In 800-Meters At NCAA East Prelims

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of Richmond sophomore Brooke Fazio (Basking Ridge, N.J.) won her first round heat in the 800-meter race and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2019 NCAA East Preliminary Championships Thursday evening in Jacksonville. Fazio will race in the quarterfinals Friday evening at 6:45 p.m. with a spot in the NCAA Championships June 5-8 in Austin, Texas (semifinals) on the line.
Fazio won the third heat as she posted a new personal-best with a time of 2:05.00, notching the fifth-fastest time in all six of the heats – a total of 48 runners. The top three from each heat and the remaining top six times advanced to the quarterfinals. Fazio was third overall at the 400-meter split, posting a time of 59.51 in the first half of the race.
Fazio has been running strong of late, winning the ECAC Outdoor Championships last weekend with a then-career-best time of 2:05.71 in the 800-meter distance. She placed fourth at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships while also winning the event at the Fred Hardy Invitational.
Junior Maria Acosta (Maywood, N.J.) also ran in the 800-meter distance and placed seventh in the fifth heat with a time of 2:08.94. Acosta placed 41st overall in the field. Earlier this year, she placed third in the 800-meter race at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships and placed second at the ECAC Championships last weekend. She posted a career-best time of 2:05.16 at the Colonial Relays (April 4), one of her two outdoor first place finishes in the distance.
Senior Eryn Mills (Middletown, N.J.) will run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with the quarterfinal round set for Friday at 8:20 p.m. She is running the third of three heats in the race. She posted a personal-best time of 10:26.72, taking home second place in the 2019 Colonial Relays.
