RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond prides itself on producing a high-quality and academically challenging environment for its students and the Spider student-athletes have been up to the task in the classroom. Richmond student-athletes are consistently exceeding their lofty standards for academic achievement, while setting new records in the classroom.
In the classroom, the 2018-19 year stands as UR's strongest academic performance on record for Spider student-athletes, surpassing last year's achievements. This year's average team GPA was a 3.22. Among our 375 student-athletes, their average GPA was a 3.17, another best in program history. Individually, 67-percent of the student-athletes earned a 3.00 or better this year, setting a new record. Also, over 62-percent of all student-athletes now boast a cumulative GPA of a 3.00 or better during their careers.
"These outstanding results in the classroom are a testament to the hard work put in by our student-athletes and our academic support staff over the past year," Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt said. "We are very grateful for the support our Richmond faculty provide our student-athletes on a daily basis. Our Richmond student-athletes are not only competing at a very high level athletically, but are excelling in the classroom while receiving a premier education at the University of Richmond. Our student-athletes' success in the classroom combined with the challenges of their athletics experience combine to provide a solid foundation for their future success after graduation."
Eight different Spider teams established new records this past year for team GPA. Setting the new marks included men's basketball, women's basketball, field hockey, football, women's golf, women's lacrosse, men's lacrosse and women's track and field.
The Spider field hockey program led the charge with the highest team GPA in the department at 3.54. Additionally, women's golf, women's track and women's cross country also boasted team GPAs over 3.50 for the season. Men's cross country led the way for the male programs in the department for team GPA. The Spiders had 15 of their 17 programs record a team GPA over a 3.00 for the year.
Ten Richmond student-athletes earned a perfect 4.00 for the entire season and the Spiders had two student-athletes – Griffin Trau and Emily Landon – receive a Fulbright Award. Richmond also placed 204 student-athletes on the conference Academic Honor Roll for the 2018-19 academic year.
