Intern on Intern: Dionte Austin Interviews Josh Hurlburt on His Summer Internship Experience

RICHMOND, Va. – This summer, University of Richmond senior defensive back Dionte Austin (Baltimore, Md.) is doing a summer internship with the Spider athletic public relations team as part of the University's internship program. Austin will be interviewing fellow Spider football members about their internship experiences throughout the summer at various places in the country. Redshirt junior linebacker Josh Hurlburt (Vienna, Va.) is next in the series in the third edition of Intern on Intern.

The Richmond Guarantee internship program has given Josh Hurlburt the experience of a lifetime. Hurlburt, a redshirt junior student-athlete on the football team and a political science major, is interning with the Williams and Jensen Law Firm in Washington, D.C. The firm specializes in international and environmental lobbying. Hurlburt covers Congressional hearings and writes briefings for the firm's partners who revise and forward the notes to the clients.
The briefings Hurlburt writes keeps clients updated on new and current legislation. Additionally, Josh attends congressional subcommittee hearings and meetings with congressmen and Williams and Jensen Law's partners to look towards passing various elements of federal legislation.
He also works closely with the firm's international business team. The international business team sets up global business meetings for foreign governments like Poland and Lithuania to meet with American businesses such as IBM and Exxon to facilitate future business endeavors in their respective countries.
Hurlburt also collaborates with the environmental staff, writing briefings on the latest environmental news and updating legislation to inform current clients. As a rising junior in the classroom, he already seized his opportunity to learn about foreign relations and environmental law, and is now able to embrace every political landscape living on Capitol Hill.
"It is going really well." Hurlburt said, "I am meeting a lot of people, and I am getting great experience in both the legislative and lobbying processes."
Hurlburt confesses that his favorite part of his experience so far has been attending the Congressional hearings on Capitol Hill. This internship will prepare him for his future plans due to the valuable experience in both political and lawful mechanics. This internship has opened a series of doors into legal aid, international business, as well as the intersection of both of these with D.C. politics. While Hurlburt's current internship requires a wide variety of responsibilities, in his future, he plans to focus on international relations and assist in the environmental sector of the government.
