Spiders Fall To Lafayette In OT, 2-1

EASTON, Pa. – The University of Richmond field hockey team outshot host Lafayette on Sunday afternoon, but the Leopards scored early in the first overtime period to take a 2-1 in in nonconference play.

The loss was the Spiders' first to a non-ranked opponent this season.

After a scoreless first quarter that saw just one shot between the two teams, the Leopards took advantage of their second penalty corner of the game, scoring off a deflection with 3:56 remaining in the opening half to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Spiders came out with momentum in the second half, outshooting the Leopards 4-1 in the third period. It was sophomore Steffie Bongers who tied the game with 46 seconds remaining in the quarter, scoring off a straight shot off a penalty corner. Fellow sophomore Olivia Frazier assisted Bongers on the play.

The fourth quarter was similar to the third, as the Spiders held a 3-0 advantage in shots, but Richmond couldn't get on the board, as the teams were tied at the end of regulation.

Lafayette scored the game winner just 2:59 into the first sudden-victory, scoring off a penalty corner for the 2-1 victory.

Richmond finished the game with an 11-5 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in penalty corners.

The Spiders return home to Crenshaw Field for a matchup with crosstown rival VCU on Friday, September 20, to open Atlantic 10 play. The team's annual Go 4 The Goal game to support those fighting pediatric cancer is set for 3 p.m.
