AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals, including the game-winner by senior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) in the 72nd minute to earn a 2-1 road win at UMass Sunday afternoon.
The win for Richmond (4-3-2, 1-0 A-10) marks the first time the program is 1-0 in Atlantic 10 play since 2015.
"This is a huge win on the road against one of the top teams in our conference," head coach Mary Beall said. "So proud of our girls for sticking to our game plan today. To win in the A-10 you need great goalkeeping, great one-on-one defending and you need to score goals. Today we did all three."
The Spiders went into halftime down 1-0 but responded three minutes into the second half as junior Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) intercepted a turnover and beat the keeper to tie the game at 1-1. Tritt is second on the team with four goals.
In the 72nd minute, freshman Molly Wierman (Sea Girt, N.J.) found Beam who fired a shot from distance inside the right post to give Richmond a 2-1 lead. It was Beam's first goal of the season.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jessica Stanfill (Fitzgerald, Ga.) made a bunch of key saves and kept UMass off the scoreboard in the second half. Stanfill made seven total saves, including one in the 86th minute.
UMass took an early lead in the third minute as Lauren Bonavita scored off a through ball from teammate Melissa Kossler.
Richmond finished with seven shots, including five in the second half. The Spiders return home to face La Salle on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m. at President's Field at River Road.
