Spiders Fall In Overtime Heartbreaker 2-1 Against La Salle
09/26/2019 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team battled hard but fell 2-1 in overtime against La Salle Thursday at the President's Field at River Road. The Spiders went ahead early in the first half but gave up two unanswered goals, including the game winner in the first overtime.
"Really disappointed with how we gave away three points today," head coach Marty Beall said. "Too many times we got caught up in their style of play and stopped doing the things that make us successful. We were undisciplined on set pieces and that cost us the game. This young group learned a valuable lesson today."
The Spiders started the scoring quickly as senior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) made a run down the field and crossed a ball inside the box where redshirt junior Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) scored off a header to make it 1-0. Walker leads the team with six goals.
Richmond (4-4-2, 1-1 A-10) almost made it to halftime with the lead but in the 43rd minute a foul inside the box led to a penalty kick for the Explorers. Jenna Soriano took the PK and tied the game at 1-1.
In the second half, both teams were looking for a goal to push ahead but neither could find the back of the net. In the 57th minute Beam had a shot just outside the box but La Salle keeper Claudia Jenkins made the save.
The best chance for the Spiders came in the 82nd minute as freshman Jessie Prillaman (Magnolia, Del.) got a one-on-one opportunity but her shot was stopped by Jenkins.
In overtime, La Salle had a couple of early shots and then found the game winner after Maci Bower raced down the field on a breakaway beating a Richmond defender and scored in the 99th minute.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jessica Stanfill (Fitzgerald, Ga.) made five saves in the loss.
Richmond finished with 11 shots, outshooting La Salle, 7-4 in the second half. The Spiders remain home to face Fordham on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. at River Road.
