Late Lock Haven Comeback Too Much For Spiders In 2-1 OT Loss
09/27/2019 | Field Hockey
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The University of Richmond field hockey team looked to be on its way to a 2-0 start in Atlantic 10 play, but a late Lock Haven goal and a game-winner from the Bald Eagles in overtime gave the hosts a 2-1 win on Friday afternoon in Lock Haven, Pa.
Â
The majority of the first quarter was played in the midfield, as neither team managed to keep possession, but the Spiders got on the board with 5:53 to play when senior Amanda DaSilva's shot off a penalty corner was deflected in by a defender. Olivia Frazier and Regan McCrossan assisted DaSilva on the play.
Â
The Spiders took momentum from there, but couldn't manage a shot through the remainder of the first half despite dominating possession. Just one of Lock Haven's first-half shots was on frame and saved by junior goalkeeper Frankie-Lynne Conklin.
Â
The Spiders came out and tripled their shot output in the first two minutes of the third quarter, rattling off a pair of shots but unable to find the back of the cage. The Bald Eagles did the same just a few minutes later, but a pair of consecutive saves from Conklin kept the hosts off the board.
Â
After neither team scored in the third period despite a combined six shots and four penalty corners, Lock Haven managed to tie the game with just under six minutes to play and hold on to send the game to overtime.
Â
Richmond had its chances in the extra time, but the Bald Eagles scored off a breakaway just over four minutes into the first overtime period to take a 2-1 win.
Â
The Spiders return to action on Sunday, September 29, when they travel to take on A-10 foe UMass. Game time in Amherst, Mass. Is set for 12 p.m.
