WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- All five Spiders recorded scores in the 70s in the second round of the Kingsmill Invitational Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg, Virginia as Richmond combined for a team score of 301 (+13), the second-best of any school in the 10-team field. The Spiders second round total was 12 shots better than the 313 (+25) they posted in soggy conditions in the first round on Sunday morning.Â
"It was very wet this morning," said coach Calle Nielson of the River Course at Kingsmill Resort. "It dried out and I think they got in a groove this afternoon. They finished strong and it was really great to see!"Â
Sophomore Naomi Mitchell is tied for fifth in the field of 60 at three-over par after shooting rounds of 73 and 74 on Sunday. Freshman Muskan Uppal is tied for 19th after shooting 73 in the second round, a six-shot improvement from her total Sunday morning. Sophomore Emily Ward is tied for 21st at nine-over par after recording scores of 78 and 75. Both freshman Vicky Zhu and junior Ally Steffen shot 79 in the second round as Richmond's score of 301 (+13) was behind only host William & Mary (298) in round two.
The Spiders will enter Monday's final round in eighth place on the leaderboard at 614 (+38). Nielson, coaching in her first event for the Spiders after coming to Richmond from the University of Virginia in June, said the goal for the final round is "to continue our good play from today and to keep moving up the leaderboard." The Spiders will start play with a shotgun start at 9:00 AM.
