Spiders, Beasley Shoot to Lead at A-10 Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Richmond Spiders blew away the field on Day 1 of the Atlantic 10 Women's Golf Championship Monday, building an 11-shot lead in blustery conditions at Evermore Resort. Richmond, defending its title from last year's inaugural A-10 Championship, combined to shoot 19-over par (307), 11 shots clear of second-place Dayton (318, +30). Loyola Chicago is in third place at 34-over par (322).
"We have played in a lot of wind this spring," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow. "Spring golf is just always windy. So I think just knowing that we've played in these conditions and just trying to stay in our process and play one shot at a time has helped. If the wind takes it somewhere, the wind takes it somewhere and onward we go."
All five Spiders are in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard with 36 holes remaining.
Richmond was led by junior Maya Beasley, who shot a 1-over 73 and holds a two-shot lead on the individual leaderboard. Beasley used a pair of birdies to offset one bogey and one double bogey and carded 14 pars, the most of any golfer in the field on a day when wind gusts topped 30 miles per hour.
"I think just staying super patient," said Beasley when asked about the key to her round. "We picked some really good lines yesterday out on the golf course, so [I was] just committing to those and hoping the ball went there."
Beasley is joined by a pair of Spider seniors in the top five, as Olivia Wilkie is in fourth place at 5-over par (77) and Hannah Lydic is in fifth place at 6-over par (78). Wilkie played her first seven holes in 1-under par after she birdied the par-5 second hole early.
Lydic, who won the individual title at last year's event, played her final six holes in 1-over par. She made a 10-footer on the difficult 18th hole to end her round with a birdie, the only birdie registered on the 18th hole Monday.
Freshman Addie Doroh is tied for sixth at 7-over par (79). Doroh steadied herself after making the turn in 6-over par, carding one birdie, seven pars, and one double bogey on her final nine holes.
Sophomore Katie Magner is tied for 10th at 9-over par.
The Spiders will begin Tuesday's second round at 8:15 AM on the first hole.
"I think this team is doing a really good job of just staying patient out there. So we're just going to try and stick to the same game plan and be confident and have fun," said Beasley.
