RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spider Leadership Development program under the guidance of Associate Athletic Director Lauren Wicklund, held a Senior Transition Workshop for Spider senior student-athletes presented by CapTech Friday in the Robins Center. The purpose of the workshop was to help prepare Spider senior student-athletes for life after college and competition.
"It is important for us to provide our student-athletes with support and education for life post-graduation," Wicklund said. "We want them to realize that being a student-athlete at Richmond will give them advantages that will last a lifetime. Today's leadership session is designed to help ease the transition to life after college and provide support structures to help them excel in the next chapter of their lives."
Five former Spider alumni attended the event and sat on a panel discussing their life after being a student-athlete. They shared their stories about leaving collegiate athletics and entering the real world upon graduation, talking about what worked for them and giving advice for what didn't work. In attendance were former Spider student-athletes Sam Conway (women's lacrosse class of 2013), Madison Day (football, men's lacrosse class of 2017), Jonathan Benjamin (men's basketball class of 2013), David Ong (class of 2004) and Patrick Kliebert (football class of 2017). Additionally, Kliebert currently works with program sponsor CapTech for the past two years.
Additionally, University of Richmond human resources talked to the senior student-athletes about what to expect when looking and accepting a first-time job after graduation. They provided advice on the application process, interview tips, compensation, employee benefits and much more to prepare the student-athletes for different aspects of life after college and competition.
