RICHMOND, Va. – With the health and safety of the campus remaining the University's primary concern, and with the on-going assessment of COVID-19 conditions by University officials, the athletics department staff has been planning for fan attendance for the upcoming basketball season. This planning process has been conducted in close consultation with conference, University, and state health officials. The athletics department has developed comprehensive COVID-informed game day operations and logistics plans.
This past Friday, the Governor announced a directive to limit attendance at athletic venues to 250. Although the University is gathering information on this new directive, it does not appear likely the University will be permitted to open the season with fans. With a maximum capacity of 250, the University of Richmond would only permit the attendance of coach and student-athlete guests for the women's basketball home opener November 29 vs. Georgetown and the men's basketball home opener December 5 vs. Furman.
In the event that future Virginia COVID guidelines will permit the University to increase attendance at some point later this season, the athletics department would announce at that time its ticket allocation plan and initiate the seating process for fans who qualify for tickets.
"As we anticipate an exciting basketball season, we are eager to accommodate our fans at the Robins Center consistent with state health guidelines," said Vice President and Director of Athletics John P. Hardt. "Although it does not appear we will be permitted to host any fans other than perhaps coach and player guests at the start of the season, we are hopeful that we will be able to create a safe experience for fans to attend games at the Robins Center at some future point during the season if allowed by Virginia's COVID guidelines."
