Spiders Shine on Education Day with Win Over Bethune-Cookman

RICHMOND, Va. – With an electrifying crowd of 2,590 and a combined 49 points from Rachel Ullstrom and Maggie Doogan, the University of Richmond women's basketball team handled business, defeating visiting Bethune-Cookman Tuesday morning inside the Robins Center for Education Day presented by Chesapeake Bank. With the win, the Spiders improved to 9-3 on the year, while the Wildcats fell to 2-8. In addition, Richmond picked up its fifth Quad 4 win of the year.

How it Happened
Richmond immediately set the tone, starting the game on a 12-0 run with three back-to-back triples from Maggie Doogan and Rachel Ullstrom. The Wildcats then managed to scratch back within six, 14-8, but a triple from Ava Persichetti ended the scoring drought for the Spiders. Rachel Ullstrom followed with a putback layup to build an 11-point lead, 19-8, with 1:52 left in the opening frame. The teams then exchanged free throws as Richmond ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to build a 25-10 lead heading into the second 10 minutes.
Bethune-Cookman scratched back to 25-14 to open the second quarter before Doogan posted a layup, sparking an 8-0 run. After two free throws from the Wildcats, the Spiders went on a 6-0 spurt to push the lead to 23, 39-16, with 6:19 left in the half. A short-lived run from the opposition cut the Richmond lead to 16, 40-24, but a layup and trey from Doogan and an additional layup from Ullstrom ended the half with the Spiders ahead 47-24.
Out of the break, Ullstrom knocked down two free throws for a 25-point advantage before an and-one play from the Wildcats trimmed the margin to 22, 49-27. Richmond then found its offensive rhythm, posting an 11-0 run with efforts from Sam Dewey, Alicia Newell, Tierra Simon and Ullstrom to give the Spiders a 33-point advantage, 60-27, with 5:12 left in the third quarter. After a lone free throw from Bethune-Cookman, Ullstrom knocked down another trey, while Ally Sweeney added a layup for a 65-28 lead. The Wildcats responded with a layup on the other end before Doogan got the Education Day crowd buzzing as Richmond pushed the lead to 67-30. Two final free throws from Doogan ended the third frame with the Spiders ahead 69-30.
Skylah Travis, with her first points since the season opener against Mount St. Mary's, collected an offensive rebound and capitalized under the basket to open the fourth quarter. After exchanging a pair of buckets, Dewey knocked down a triple to give the Spiders a 42-point advantage, 74-32. The Wildcats then whittled the lead down to 38, but Dewey answered with a layup to preserve a 40-point cushion, 78-38. Bethune-Cookman added seven points, while Dewey posted a final triple as Richmond ran away with the Education Day win, 78-41.
Notes on the Game
Richmond will look to round out non-conference play this weekend at the 4 Tha Culture Holiday Classic inside the Henrico Sports & Events Center. The Spiders will face Alabama A&M on Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. before taking on Penn State on Dec. 21 at 2:30 p.m.

- The Spiders were paced by Maggie Doogan, who posted 26 points and recorded her fifth double-double of the season, 16th of her career, with 11 rebounds while adding six assists. She shot 9-of-13 from the field and 5-of-6 from deep and added two steals and a block.
- Rachel Ullstrom added a season-high 23 points and finished with four rebounds, three assists, a block and three steals.
- Sam Dewey posted her second double-digit outing of the season, recording 12 points for the final Spider in double figures. She shot 4-of-5 from the field and 2-of-3 from three.
- Alicia Newell matched a career-high five steals and added eight points.
- Skylah Travis finished with two points, her first since the season opener against Mount St. Mary's.
- Annika Manthy recorded her first collegiate rebound.
- As a team, Richmond shot 28-of-66 (42.4 percent) from the field, 13-of-37 (35.1 percent) from three and 12-of-16 (75 percent) from the free throw line. The Spiders totaled 42 rebounds, 21 assists, four blocks and a season-high 15 steals.
- Richmond scored 30 points in the paint and 32 points off 27 Wildcat turnovers.
- The Spider bench chipped in 20 points, led by Dewey with 12 and Persichetti with six.
- Richmond rounded out its non-conference slate at home with a 4-1 record, 5-1 overall.
