Golden Named to Abdul-Jabbar Award Watch List

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Spiders grad student Grant Golden has been named to the watch list for the 2020-21 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Friday. Golden is one of 20 players in Division I on the watch list for the Abdul-Jabbar Award, which is given to the top center in the country.Â
Golden led the Spiders to a 24-7 record last season while earning Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors after averaging 13.4 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game. One of the nation's best-passing big men, Golden's 3.4 assists per game were 11th most in the A-10 and second nationally among players 6'10" or taller, trailing only Yale's Jordan Bruner.Â
Golden enters his final season with 1,472 points, 15th most in school history and the fourth most amassed by a Spider with one year of eligibility remaining. He is already the only player in Richmond history to earn All-Conference honors following his freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons.Â
Earlier in the week, Spiders senior guard Jacob Gilyard, Golden's roommate, was named to the watch list for the Bob Cousy Award, given to the nation's top point guard. Richmond is one of just four schools with a player on the watch list for national awards for best center and best point guard along with Illinois, Virginia, and Wisconsin.Â
The field for the Abdul-Jabbar Award will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists in mid-February and halved to five finalists in March. The winner will be presented on April 9, 2021. The public will have a chance to contribute to the voting process, with Starting Five Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies. For more information on voting and the Cousy Award, log onto www.hoophallawards.com and follow @hoophall and #KareemAward on Twitter and Instagram.
