Football’s Rod West Named To AFCA’s 35 Under 35 List

RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond football co-defensive coordinator Rod West was named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) 35 Under 35 List Monday. The AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute is a prestigious program aimed at identifying and developing premier, future leaders in the football coaching profession.
West is in his fourth season on head coach Russ Huesman's staff at Richmond and his sixth season overall with Huesman. West was promoted to Co-Defensive Coordinator following the 2019 season after spending the previous year cornerbacks coach and defensive pass game coordinator. He spent his first two years as the dimes coach and was also the co-special teams coordinator in 2018.
In 2019, the Spiders finished first in the Colonial Athletic Association in pass defense. Richmond held opponents to just 194.8 yards per game against and a league-low 179 completions allowed. Senior captain Daniel Jones was named to the CAA All-Conference Team. He finished third on the team with 84 tackles, including a team-high 52 solo tackles. His 7.0 tackles per game ranks 16th in the CAA while his 52 solo tackles ranks fourth in the conference.
The 35 Under 35 coaches are invited to attend the one-day institute that features a curriculum of interactive lectures focused on topics specifically tailored to emphasize leadership in the coaching profession, ethics, influential responsibilities, career progression, and family balance. Due to the 2021 Convention being moved to the AFCA Digital library, the 2021 AFCA 35 Under 35 representatives will get to take part in the program at the 2022 AFCA Convention.
Members of the AFCA 2021 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute receive a stipend to assist with expenses incurred while attending the AFCA Convention. They will be published in the bi-monthly AFCA Magazine, AFCA Insider weekly email blast, and/or have their articles and videos added to the AFCA Educational Library. Additionally, participants will be placed on the AFCA Foundation Committee and become a part of a prestigious network of rising coaches in the profession along with many other great benefits.
