Savoca and Menges Sweep SoCon Player Of The Week Honors
02/11/2020 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond junior midfielder Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) and senior long-stick midfielder Sean Menges (Richmond, Va.) were named Southern Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively Tuesday afternoon for their play against No. 4 Maryland Saturday. The two awards gives the Spiders 29 SoCon weekly awards in program history, the most by any school in the conference since it began play in 2015.
Savoca earns his first-ever SoCon weekly award, picking up the Offensive Player of the Week nod. He posted a hat trick against the Terrapins, including scoring the Spiders' first two goals of the season. His first goal of the year came just 2:04 into the game, setting a new program-record for fastest goal to start a season. His three goals marked the seventh hat trick of his career and the first since scoring four at High Point last year in the regular season.
Menges picks up his second career SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honors for his play against the Terrapins. He caused a career-high six turnovers Saturday while adding six ground balls. His play helped the Spiders record 40 ground balls as a team, the seventh most in a single game in program history. His six caused turnovers are the third most in a single game in program history and the most for him since causing five against nationally ranked Duke last season.
The Spiders continue their three-game home stand to open the season Friday evening when they host Marist. Game time between the No. 19 Spiders and defending MAAC champion Red Foxes is set for 6 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
