TAMPA, Fla. -- The Richmond Spiders women's golf team made its spring debut on Monday, competing in the first two rounds of the Old Friends Invitational at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club. The Spiders registered a team score of 622 (+46), placing them fifth in the seven-team field.
Freshman Vicky Zhu led the Spiders with a 152 (+8) over 36 holes, tied for ninth among 38 individuals in the field. Zhu is two shots clear of fellow freshman Muskan Uppal, who is tied for 16th after shooting rounds of 79 (+7) and 75 (+3) in the first two rounds. Sophomore Emily Ward is also in the top 25 on the leaderboard after playing the first two rounds at 13-over par, tied for 23rd in the field.Â
The third and final round will be played on Tuesday. "I stressed to the team that tomorrow we need to focus on limiting the double bogeys and higher and play the par fives in even par or better," said coach Calle Nielson. "This is our first event of the spring and I saw some good spurts of golf on the course today! We're looking forward to tomorrow."
