02/27/2020 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond junior guard Jacob Gilyard is one of 10 semifinalists for the 2020 Naismith Men's Defensive Player of the Year award, the Atlanta Tip-Off Club announced on Thursday. Gilyard, who leads the nation with 3.14 steals per game this season, was the only semifinalist from outside the high-major conferences.
Gilyard's 88 total steals this season are seven more than any other player in Division I and one shy of tying the school single-season record of 89 he set in 2017-18. His 265 career steals are the most in Richmond history, third-most among active D-I players, and 32 more than any other player over the last three seasons. Gilyard was named to the Atlantic 10's All-Defense Team last season after leading the conference with 2.84 steals per game, a figure that ranked seventh in the nation.
The four finalists for the Naismith Men's Defensive Player of the Year award will be announced on March 12th and the winner will be announced on April 5th during the Naismith Awards Brunch in Atlanta.
