RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond athletics department is working closely with campus leadership to monitor and respond to the evolving COVID-19 situation.
Earlier today, the University of Richmond announced measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 amongst the campus community (LINK). Sports that are currently in season will continue to practice and compete. However, the athletics department will make decisions about athletic team travel on a case-by-case basis. Effective immediately, and in the interests of protecting the health and safety of our student-athletes and campus community, attendance at home athletic events for the foreseeable future will be limited to essential personnel and the parents/guardians of University of Richmond student-athletes.
Richmond athletics will follow the lead of the NCAA as it pertains to men's basketball postseason opportunities in the NCAA or NIT championships. The University of Richmond is working closely with the NCAA, which has established a COVID-19 advisory panel of leading medical, public health and epidemiology experts as well as NCAA member schools, to guide its response to the outbreak of the COVID-19 for all NCAA events.
Additionally, the University of Richmond will take extra precautions at home facilities including cleaning commonly touched surfaces, having readily available hand sanitizer stations and encouragement of guest taking preventative actions advised by the CDC.
The Richmond athletics department will continue to provide live in-game video, if possible, for home events, in addition to social media coverage for fans to follow events remotely.
Any additional updates regarding Richmond athletics events will be published on www.richmondspiders.com and shared on the Spider social media accounts @SpiderAthletics.
We will continue to closely monitor the situation as well as recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Virginia Department of Health, and we will work together with campus officials to make any additional changes deemed in the best interest of the health and welfare of our campus community.
