RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond redshirt junior Sam Geiersbach and freshman Arden Tierney were named as 2020 Inside Lacrosse Media Honorable Mention All-America, the publication announced on Tuesday.
Geiersbach collected Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors and was named to the 2020 Tewaaraton Award Watch List in mid-February. The West Babylon, N.Y. native finished the year nationally ranked in assists-per-game (4th, 3.29), points-per-game (4th, 6.42), assists (5th, 23) and points (6th, 45).
"Sam has always been a significant scoring threat for us," said head coach Allison Kwolek. "But this year, she became our main feeding threat too. I was impressed watching her game evolve in that way. Sam also continued to show us that she can step up in pressure situations from scoring multiple times when we were man down to driving home the tying goal to take us to overtime against UVA."
A two-time A-10 Player of the Week, Geiersbach led the league in points, points per game, assists and assists per game. Geiersbach worked her way up the program record books, including netting her 200th career point with the game-tying goal against then-ranked No. 6 Virginia. In only 48 games, she is now fifth with 79 career assists, seventh with 218 career points and ninth with 139 career goals.
Tierney, the No. 27 incoming freshman by Inside Lacrosse Women, made a big impact on the draw for the Spiders this season. The Port Washington, N.Y. native ranked fifth in the country averaging 8.57 draw controls per game and was key to the Spiders ranking second nationally in draw control percentage (.674) and fifth in draw controls per game (18.57).
"Arden came in and took on a lot of responsibility right away especially at the draw," Kwolek said. "She dedicated a significant amount of time honing her skills at the circle over the fall and shortened spring and it was great to see that payoff with the success we had there. And then to be such a threat with the ball on offense – she helped elevate our offensive game."
Three times Tierney collected double-figure draw controls, including netting 11 in back-to-back contests to add to her total of a team-leading 60 draw controls. The two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week scored in all seven contests, twice finding the back of the net six times, leading the league in goals (24) and ranking second nationally in goals among all freshmen. Tierney led the A-10 in goals per game (7.69) and was only second to teammate Geiersbach in points (34) and points-per-game (4.86).
"I'm proud of both of them and eager to watch them get back on the field," said Kwolek.
