RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team played 10 matches before their spring season was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Spiders were 4-6 overall but had a perfect 2-0 record at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
Richmond started the 2019-20 campaign with six fall tournaments to help its roster of 10 players get matches in. The Spiders also hosted the River City open for the second-straight season with this year's edition hosting all Virginia schools.
Senior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) led the team with a 10-4 fall record in singles and classmate George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) wasn't far behind with a 9-5 mark. Newcomer Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) posted an 8-8 singles record during the fall season. Three Richmond players finished with seven fall wins in sophomore Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas), sophomore John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and freshman Ricky Bell (Rockville, Md.).
Senior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) each had six wins in the fall but were a force in doubles play. The duo went 4-2 in doubles to earn a No. 60 national ranking to enter the spring season. Freshmen Ike Simon (Potomac, Md.) and Nick Mueller (Winchester, Va.) also made their Spider debuts in the fall. Simon and Mueller each played six matches.
Evans and Erwin finished with a 7-3 doubles record in 10 fall matches. The spring season started on Jan. 19 with a road match at Delaware. The Spiders earned a close 4-3 win after taking the doubles point and a match clinching win from Erwin at No. 5 singles.
Walsh (No. 3 singles) and Lovitt (No. 4 singles) also picked up wins to start the dual match season 1-0. Erwin was named A-10 Player of the Week on Jan. 21 after his big win against Delaware.
Richmond lost its next two matches on the road at James Madison (L, 4-3) and at VCU (L, 6-1). In the tough 4-3 loss at JMU, Fernandez (No. 1 singles), Erwin (No. 5 singles) and Lovitt (No. 3 singles) earned wins.
The Spiders bounced back with a 7-0 sweep in the home opener against Hampton and opened 1-0 in Atlantic 10 play at Duquesne with a 5-2 win. Richmond won all three doubles matches against the Dukes and received wins from Evans (No. 2 singles), Walsh (No. 3 singles), Erwin (No. 5 singles), Bell (No. 6 singles).
Richmond was 3-2 on the season before a tough stretch in February saw the team drop three-straight road matches at Navy (L, 6-1), at Furman (L, 6-1) and at Wofford (L, 4-3). The Spiders won all three doubles matches against Wofford but couldn't keep the momentum going in singles. Erwin (No. 3 singles) and Lovitt (No. 4 singles) earn wins against the Terriers.
In what proved to be the final home match of the season, Richmond remained undefeated at Westhampton with a 5-2 win against The Citadel. Mueller earned his first collegiate win at No. 6 singles. Fernandez (No. 1 singles), Evans (No. 2 singles) and Lovitt (No. 5 singles) fittingly all picked up wins in their final home matches.
On March 5, the Spiders lost another road match at Elon, 5-2. One week later the season would be cut short due to Covid-19. Richmond, who finished runner-up in the A-10 Championship last season, was poised to make another run with three senior leaders at the core of the team (Fernandez, Evans, Lovitt).
Fernandez finished 4-6 at No. 1 singles and Evans was 4-6 at No. 2 singles. Lovitt had a 6-4 dual match record going 1-0 at No. 3 singles, 4-3 at No. 4 and 1-1 at No. 5. Walsh was 3-6 after going 3-3 at No. 3 singles, 0-2 at No. 4 and 0-1 at No. 6. Erwin had a perfect 3-0 record at No. 5 singles, 0-2 at No. 3, 1-1 at No. 4 and 1-0 at No. 6.
