Spiders Land In Top 15 In Preseason Poll, Receive Spot In Projected 2021 Bracket

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- The Spiders list of early preseason accolades grew longer this week, with Richmond landing in the top 15 of one preseason poll and receiving the highest seed of any Atlantic 10 team in ESPN's initial projection of the 2021 NCAA Tournament Bracket.Â
Richmond was ranked 13th in the first 2020-21 rankings from the San Jose Mercury News, their highest position in any major 2020-21 preseason rankings this offseason. The paper noted the Spiders "senior-loaded lineup" and called Richmond the best bet to emerge as next season's San Diego State. The Aztecs went 30-2 this season and reached as high as fourth in the AP Top 25.Â
After ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi had the Spiders as one of the last teams in the NCAA Tournament field in his final projection of the 2020 bracket, Richmond is safely in the field in his initial look at the 2021 bracket. Lunardi has the Spiders as a 9-seed in next year's field, receiving the highest seed of any team in the Atlantic 10. Last week, Lunardi told RichmondSpiders.com that his team uses a team's offensive and defensive efficiency and the percentage of minutes a team is projected to return next season when determining his preseason projections. The Spiders are projected to return players who combined for more than 94 percent of the team's total minutes in 2019-20, when Richmond went 24-7 and 14-4 in the Atlantic 10.Â
Spider fans who wish to be a part of the 2020-21 campaign can now place a deposit on season tickets and lock in their Robins Center seats for the season.
