RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond athletics department mourns the passing of longtime men's basketball and football public address announcer Mike Levay and would like to honor him for his years of service as the in-venue voice of the Spiders. Levay took a medical leave of absence last basketball season, announced his retirement of his Spider duties this year due to a cancer diagnosis and unfortunately passed away Monday morning (August 17). Levay will always be a beloved member of the Spider athletics family.
"Spider athletics is keeping long-time public address announcer Mike Levay and his family in our hearts and thoughts after his battle with cancer," Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt said. "To many of us, Mike's voice is synonymous with Spider athletics. He was a big part of so many great moments in Spider history and our home games will not be the same without his voice echoing throughout our venues."
Levay was on the microphone at the Robins Center and Robins Stadium for over a decade, joining the Spiders in 2005. His voice was a staple in the Richmond area for over 30 years, spending time as the public address announcer for the Richmond Renegades of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) from 1990-2010, where men's basketball head coach Chris Mooney first heard him in action. Additionally, Levay spent almost a decade as a radio host in Richmond on multiple stations.
"Being the public address announcer for the Richmond Spiders was the most favored job I have ever had," Levay said upon his retirement from Spider Atheltics last week. "Thank you to all of the Spider faithful and fans that made the job so special. I am forever grateful."
