RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond President Ronald A. Crutcher announced Tuesday that Richard Coughlan, Associate Professor of Management, has accepted an appointment as the University's NCAA faculty athletics representative (FAR). Coughlan, a member of the Richmond faculty since 1998, succeeds Linda Boland, who earlier this summer completed a two-year stint in that post.
In his role as faculty athletics representative, Coughlan will be tasked with representing Richmond and its faculty in relations with the NCAA and the Atlantic-10 Conference. In addition, he will provide campus leadership on athletically-related issues and act as a liaison with the University's governance system. Coughlan is a former member of the university's Faculty Athletics Committee, which he chaired in 2018-19, and has served as faculty representative on the University's Athletics Committee since 2018.
"I am grateful for Dr. Coughlan's service in his new role as the NCAA faculty athletics representative," said President Ronald A. Crutcher. "Richard is a respected University leader, educator, and advocate for our student athletes and the Spider athletics program. His leadership and dedication extends to valued service as Chair of the Faculty Athletics Committee, a faculty appointment to the Board of Trustees' athletics committee, and work on the Athletics Strategic Plan Steering Committee. I am confident he will build upon the great work of Dr. Linda Boland in her service as FAR, and I look forward to working with Richard closely as we continue to advance the shared aims of Spider Athletics."
"It is an honor to be appointed to this position that sits at the intersection of many of my interests," Coughlan said. "Over the last 22 years, I have had the good fortune to work closely with hundreds of student-athletes and have therefore developed a deep appreciation for the elements necessary for them to have success in the classroom and in athletic competition. During this time of significant change in both higher education and college athletics, Richmond has a unique opportunity to enhance the student-athlete experience and build on our legacy of preparing Spiders for success after graduation. I am grateful to President Crutcher for the opportunity to serve the university as the next faculty athletics representative."
Coughlan joined the faculty of the Robins School of Business in 1998. During his time at Richmond, he has taught courses on business ethics, organizational behavior, and negotiations to audiences ranging from undergraduates to chief executives. In recognition of his work in the classroom, he earned the University's Distinguished Educator Award.
Coughlan's latest research focuses on creating accountable cultures in organizations. His previous research, on loyalty in organizations, earned him the Robins School's Outstanding Scholar Award.
Outside the classroom, Coughlan hosts a pair of popular interview programs. In 2011, he created "C-Suite Conversations," a series of unscripted, on-stage interviews conducted live in front of audiences drawn from the business and campus communities.
In 2013, Coughlan launched "Dialogue on Decision Making," a weekly podcast in which he and Richmond head men's basketball coach Chris Mooney discussed parallels between decision-making in sports and decision-making in business. In 2018, the series expanded to include interviews of leaders from business, non-profit organizations, and other sectors.
Coughlan received his bachelor's degree in commerce from the University of Virginia in 1989, before going on to earn both an MBA and M.S. degree in management from the University of Arizona in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Coughlan later earned a Ph.D. in Management (Judgment and Decision Making) from the University of Arizona in 1998.
