NCAA Division I Council Sets Start Date For 2020-21 Basketball Season

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Men's and women basketball teams will be permitted to begin the 2020-21 season on November 25th, the NCAA Division I Council ruled on Wednesday. The firm start date, along with the Council's mandate that all teams play fewer non-conference games, will require Richmond's men's and women's teams to modify their non-conference schedules over the next few weeks.
"The process of more than 350 teams rearranging their schedules is going to be complex and a bit hectic, but that doesn't change our goal," said men's head coach Chris Mooney. "We will play as competitive a non-conference schedule as possible in order to prepare ourselves for what will be a demanding Atlantic 10 season."
"We are eager to get some clarity on a start date this week after a long bout of tremendous uncertainty," said women's head coach Aaron Roussell. "This team has worked incredibly hard and we are seeing the fruits of that labor in these early workouts. I am excited for our fans to see this new version of Richmond Women's Basketball."
Full schedules for the Spiders men's and women's teams will be released at a later date. For the 49th season, Richmond will play its home games at the Robins Center on the University of Richmond campus. A decision on whether or not fans will be permitted to attend games will be made at a later date by the University in accordance with state COVID guidelines.
