Spiders Named One of Five "Teams On The Rise"

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Richmond Spiders are one of five Division I teams "on the rise" entering the 2021-22 season, according to CBS Sports College Basketball Insider Jon Rothstein. Rothstein identified the Spiders as one of the nation's up-and-coming teams in his column on CollegeHoopsToday.com Friday.

Rothstein is enticed by the experience on the Richmond roster, noting that "older teams are always best equipped to have success." Richmond returns four starters from last year's 14-9 team: grad student Grant Golden, grad student Jacob Gilyard, senior Nathan Cayo, and junior Tyler Burton. Grad student Nick Sherod, who has been a full-time starter for the Spiders since his sophomore year but missed the 2020-21 season with a knee injury, also returns.

The Spiders "should be the Atlantic 10's top challenger to [2021 league champion] St. Bonaventure," according to Rothstein. Richmond will open the 2021-22 season November 9 at the Robins Center vs NC Central.
