Women’s Tennis Completes Day One at ITA Regionals

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team completed the first day of competition at ITA Atlantic Regionals (South), which is being held all weekend at the Liberty Tennis Complex in Lynchburg, Va. The day was highlighted by the doubles team of Helene Heiberg and Marta Buendia winning their match to advance to the round of 16 on Saturday, and Emily Dunbar winning her singles match to advance to the round of 32 on Saturday.
In addition to Richmond, participating teams include Liberty, Virginia, Old Dominion, James Madison, VCU, William & Mary, Virginia Tech, Longwood, Radford, West Virginia, and Marshall.
In the singles main draw, the final eight participants will advance to the ITA Atlantic Super Regional, held at Virginia, Oct. 22-25. In the doubles main draw, the final four doubles teams will move on to the ITA Atlantic Super Regional at Virginia, Oct. 22-25.
After a bye in the first round doubles, Heiberg/Buendia defeated Briee Joliff/Alexandra Hincu (Longwood) by a score of 6-1 in the round of 32 to advance to Saturday's round of 16. Emily Dunbar and Carly Cohen won their round of 64 doubles match against Nina Hederich/Zoe Barton (Longwood) 6-1 before dropping a close battle to Erika Cheng/Chhinda Som (Virginia Tech) 7-6(4). The duo of Sara Salemyr/Andrea Campodonico fell 7-5 to Maria Juliana Parra Romero/Micaela Ode Mitre (Liberty) in their round of 64 doubles match.
In singles competition, Buendia defeated Hederich 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 128 before falling to Ine Strange (W&M) 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 64. Dunbar was the only Spider to win her singles match in the round of 64, defeating Annie Clark (Virginia Tech) 6-0, 6-2 to advance to Saturday's round of 32. Campodonico fell 6-2, 6-2 to Amber Odell Virginia, while Salemyr and Cohen each battled to a tiebreaker. Salemyr ultimately fell to Hedda Gurholt (W&M) 7-6(3), 6-2 while Cohen lost to Amanda Nord (JMU) 6-3, 7-6(5).
