REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- The Richmond Spiders women's golf team turned in one of the best rounds in program history Saturday afternoon at Rehoboth Beach Country Club, shooting a 290 (+2) to move into second place through two rounds at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational. Richmond will enter Sunday's final round at 594 (+18), two shots behind Princeton (592, +16) in in the 12-team field. The Spiders combined for a team score of 304 (+16) in Round 1 Saturday morning and followed it with a 290 (+2) in Round 2, the fourth-lowest 18-hole team score ever for the Spiders.Â
"My message to the team this morning was to stay patient as we expected the wind to get stronger throughout the day," said coach Calle Barlow. "They stayed super patient and I loved seeing them shoot the second-lowest score of any team in in the afternoon."
Four Spiders are in the top 10 among the event's 72 competitors. Junior Emily Ward and freshman Lauren Jones are tied for 8th at 148 (+4). Jones led the Spiders with a 70 (-2) in Round 2, tied for the 13th-best single round in program history. Senior Naomi Mitchell and sophomore Rory Weinfurther are one shot back in a tie for 10th at 149 (+5). Mitchell played the par 5s at Rehoboth Beach Country Club in 1-under par Saturday, tied for fifth-best in the field.Â
Junior Vicky Zhu is tied for 42nd after shooting 79-79/158 (+14) Saturday. Competing as an individual, sophomore Claire Yioulos is tied for 51st at 162 (+18) after shooting rounds of 83 and 79.Â
Richmond's second-round score was the lowest by the Spiders since shooting 289 (+1) in the final round at the River Landing Classic last spring. The only other lower rounds in program history are a 289 (+1) in THE second round of the 2017 Navy Fall Invitational and a 287 (-1) in the second round of a match vs Columbia in 2018.Â
The Spiders enter Sunday's final round with a chance to win their second straight tournament after earning the team title at the Navy Fall Invitational earlier this month. "It's going to be a similar message for tomorrow: be patient," said Barlow.
Richmond will tee off at 9:00 AM Sunday. The Spiders will be paired with Princeton and Pennsylvania in the final round, which is expected to be played in cooler and windy conditions.Â
