10/02/2021 | Women's Golf
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Richmond women's golf team combined for a team score of 304 (+16) in Saturday's opening round of the Navy Fall Invitational and will enter Sunday's final round with a one-shot lead. The Spiders are ahead of Sacred Heart (305, +17) by the narrowest possible margin and hold a five-shot advantage on third-place Delaware State. Richmond is ahead of every other team in the 13-team field by seven or more strokes.
"I like the position we've put ourselves in," said coach Calle Barlow, "but we are are going to need to continue to stay patient tomorrow."
The Spiders made 51 pars Saturday, three more than any other team in the field.Â
Freshman Lauren Jones led Richmond with a 73 (+1) Saturday, carding three birdies and a pair of double bogeys along with 13 pars. She is part of a three-way tie for second on the individual leaderboard, six shots behind Delaware State's Nattavadee Khunsri.Â
"Lauren played really well today and managed to make some great birdies," said Barlow.Â
Teammate Rory Weinfurther, a sophomore, is tied for fifth at 74 (+2). Weinfurther secured her place in the top five with a birdie on the par-4 18th hole, which played as the fourth-hardest hole at the Naval Academy Gofl Course Saturday.Â
Junior Vicky Zhu is tied for 14th at 77 (+5) and seniors Emily Ward and Naomi Mitchell are tied for 22nd after both shooting 80 (+8) in Round 1.Â
Playing as an individual, freshman Christine Mandile shot 82 (+10) Saturday and is tied for 35th in the field of 76.Â
The Spiders will tee off in Sunday's final round at 8:40 AM. Richmond is seeking its first tournament win since sharing the title at the 2019 Bucknell Spring Break Collegiate. The Spiders haven't won a tournament with a field of 13 or more teams since coming out on top in the 15-team Bill Berg Invitational in 2017.Â
Far from nervous, Barlow said she and the Spiders are "looking forward to the challenge tomorrow."
