RICHMOND, Va. -- Michael Walz, a senior at Conestoga High in Berwyn, Pa., has signed his National Letter of Intent and will join the Spiders basketball team next fall. Walz, a 6'11" center, chose Richmond from a group of nine Division I offers, including Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 and Penn State in the Big Ten.Â
Walz nearly averaged a double-double as a junior at Conestoga last season, scoring 9.5 points and collecting 10 rebounds per game. He also averaged 3 assists and 2.5 blocks as Conestoga finished its COVID-shortened season at 7-3. Following the season, he was named First Team All-Central League as well as First Team All-Maine Line.Â
During the summer, Walz told Matthew Ryan of City of Basketball Love that he was swayed by Richmond's offensive system, which often runs through the post. "They really showed me how much they value their bigs," Walz said. "I was really sold on how they'll incorporate me in their offense."
Walz added that the Richmond campus, currently rated as the nation's most beautiful by the Princeton Review, also helped. "The first thing that I thought - this is the most gorgeous place I've ever been," said Walz of his first visit to campus.Â
Walz plays AAU basketball for Philly Pride. Walz and his Conestoga High teammates will open their 2021-22 season on December 10 vs Downingtown East.Â
