Spiders win streak snapped by Saint Joseph's in Atlantic 10 opener
12/30/2021 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Spiders had few answers against a determined Saint Joseph's squad Thursday at the Robins Center, falling to the Hawks 83-56 in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. The loss was Richmond's first since falling to Mississippi State on November 27th and snapped UR's six-game win streak.
"Credit to Saint Joseph's," head coach Chris Mooney said. "They had a good game plan and executed it well. They spread us out on defense more than we liked. It felt like we were on our heels and forced to chase."
The Hawks shot 52 percent (31-60) from the field, while Richmond hit on just 28 percent (20-72) of its field goal attempts. It was the Spiders lowest field-goal percentage in a game since March 1, 2014, when UR hits 21 percent of its shots in a 66-43 loss to Rhode Island.
Saint Joseph's opened the game hitting eight of its first 10 shots, taking a 17-11 lead after seven minutes. Richmond responded with a 17-6 spurt to build a 28-23 advantage but managed just one field goal in the final 5:30 of the first half, allowing the Hawks to take a 38-32 lead at intermission,
The Hawks would only build their lead after halftime, hitting 12 of their first 17 shots from the field after the break to take a commanding 48-27 lead midway through the half and coast to an 83-56 win.
In addition to snapping Richmond's six-game win streak, the loss was also UR's first at home this season, dropping the Spiders to 6-1 at the Robins Center.
Grant Golden led the Spiders with 14 points -- all in the first half -- and added seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Tyler Burton was the other Spider in double-figures, finishing with 11 points and six rebounds. Jacob Gilyard led UR with six assists and four steals.
Richmond heads on the road to face Saint Louis on Sunday. Tip off on CBS Sports Network is set for 2 p.m.
"The best thing in sports is being able to play again quickly," said Mooney. "We won't dismiss this loss, but we're not going to dwell on it."
