Women’s Track & Field Wins Eight Events at CNU Holiday Open

Newport News, Va. – The University of Richmond women's track and field team opened the 2021-22 indoor season collecting eight first-place finishes Sunday at the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open at the Vince Brown Track in the Freeman Center.
Brooke Fazio (Basking Ridge, N.J.) broke CNU's Freeman Center facility record in the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:07.68 to win the event. Fazio broke Michaela Rose of Ambassador's record time of 2:12.27 set Dec. 9, 2018. Fazio's time today is also just 0.06 shy of her 10th-place finish mark of 2:07.62 at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championship in March.
Richmond swept the top-six places in the 600-meter run, paced by Rachel Helbling (McDonald, Pa.) turning in a time of 1:33.28. Kayla O'Connell (Marshfield, Mass.) was just on her heels with a time of 1:35.19. Newcomers Virginia Beringer (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Morgan Lyons (Basking Ridge, N.J.) finished third (1:41.77) and fourth (1:42.02), respectively. Maddie Orr (Rumson, N.J.) took fifth with a time of 1:43.24 as Dylan Miller (Phoenixville, Pa.) posted a time of 1:47.12 in her first collegiate event.
In the long jump, Kayla Woods (Wilmington, Del.) finished first while Grace Mittl (Bethlehem, Pa.) took third. Woods turned in a distance of 5.79m, as Mittl jumped 5.28m.
Tamar Accius (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Woods both advanced to the finals of the 60-meter dash. Woods finished first with a time of 7.80 as Accius came in third at 7.88. Kyra Blakeslee (Wayne, N.J.) finished ninth in her collegiate debut with a time of 8.41, just shy of advancing to the finals.
After advancing in the 60-meter hurdles with a first-place time of 8.93 seconds, Kamryn Ross (Richmond, Va.) dropped time to win the finals with a time of 8.90.
Ross and Accius then took first and second place, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. Ross crossed the finish line with a time of 25.78 as Accius turned in a time of 25.99. Blakeslee finished sixth with a time of 28.10.
In the 3,000-meter run, Richmond swept the top-three places. Elizabeth Stockman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) posted a time of 9:42.05 to win the event. Madison Trippett (Parkersburg, W.Va.) crossed the finish line at 10:00.33 and Anna George (Montville, N.J.) finished with a time of 10:32.14.
Richmond quartet of Helbling, Orr, Beringer and Lyons closed out the meet winning the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:02.38, a full 20 seconds ahead of second place.
After a break for the holidays, Richmond is back in action in the new year to compete at the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, S.C. Jan. 14-15.
